Onyx is fragile.
Onyx countertops typically include a fiberglass backing compound to strengthen the slab and keep it together. What this means is that onyx slabs are not able to be extracted from the ground as well as other stones, so the slabs are much smaller in size than something like granite (a very hard stone).
