Kitchens are a trendy and functional addition to outdoor living spaces like decks and patios. Outdoor kitchens are excellent for entertaining neighborhood parties, family event functions or just getting a good dose of fresh air while cooking. They have an upscale, fashionable look and are made to complete the same purposes as an indoor kitchen. Although installation of a full outdoor kitchen can be expensive, there are a few tips to keep in mind that will help homeowners save money when planning and shopping for what is needed to create the best outdoor cooking and eating environment.

Grill

The grill is often the most expensive piece of an outdoor kitchen. Rather than buying a new grill, spend some time cleaning up the one you already have. Scrape off old grime and charred grease remains, clean the glass areas and individually wash the inner racks. Also, check out your grill manufacturer's available replacement parts. Most companies sell replacement parts for grills ranging from warming racks to igniters. Proper cleaning and replacement parts can lead to the appearance of an entirely new grill and costs a fraction of the price.

Counters

If you're limited on space or want to save effort and money, look into buying a single island or bar-type structure as opposed to outfitting the area with counters. Many companies offer fairly large islands and bars for reasonable prices. This will not only save you money, but it will also save you the hassle of installing multiple counter structures in addition to keeping as much space open as possible. If you have your heart set on counters for your outdoor kitchen, check your local home improvement store for imitation granite, marble or any other hard, polished surface. This will give your kitchen a more upscale look without the hefty price tag.

Storage

Opt for storage systems that serve a dual purpose. Some storage systems are designed to fit beneath chairs and benches, giving you and your guests a seating area while saving you the cost of buying both seating and storage devices. It also has the continued benefit of saving cooking, walking and eating space in your outdoor kitchen. Also, some counter structures come with storage in cupboards beneath the counter surface. These are also an effective cost-saver.
