Does Granite Make a Good Top for a Kitchen Table

Granite is among the most durable and visually appealing construction materials on the market and is one of the most widely-used materials for countertops, giving a polished look to a room. In recent years, its use as a tabletop material has grown in popularity. This material provides the same features and function as other materials. Overall, its ease of care and durability make it an ideal choice for a kitchen tabletop.

Shapes and Colors

Granite tabletops may be purchased premade in a variety of shapes and sizes. Among these options are standard circle, rectangular and square shapes as well as expansion pieces and even drawers built in for storage. To save money, the tabletop may be designed using granite remnants, which will save as much as 50 percent over full slabs. Custom orders may also be placed, which will expand the shape options dramatically. Color selection is almost unlimited; granite is available to match just about any décor style.

Function

Most types of stone are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional, and granite is among the most widely used options in home decor for these reasons. It is resistant to scratching, staining and burning, ideal for use as a tabletop. This material is one of the only types that will withstand cutting or chopping directly on the surface. It may chip if heavy objects are dropped, and requires sealing to protect against stains, but is otherwise very durable.

General Maintenance

Little care is required to keep a granite tabletop looking good. The main exception is occasional resealing, which is a factor for several other materials as well. This process is simple enough for most novice handymen and should be done once every year or two, depending on the manufacturer. A good rule is to reseal if water stops beading on the surface. A daily wipe-down with mild soap and lukewarm water will keep it clean and shiny while a bit of stone cleaner and a lint-free towel will work for spills.
