Care for a Limestone Patio

A natural stone used for interior and patio flooring, limestone is durable, but it is also soft and can scratch easily. In addition to dirt and grime from the air and regular foot traffic, moss and algae buildup can also affect the look of your limestone patio. Given regular care and maintenance, though, a limestone patio can retain its natural good looks for years.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, sweep the limestone patio floor regularly to remove grit and dust.

Secondly, clean limestone regularly with a few squirts of mild liquid soap mixed with a gallon of warm water. Too much detergent can leave streaks and attract dirt. Rinse well with clear water. Clean up spills as soon as they occur to prevent staining.

Thirdly, clean up efflorescence with a broom or damp mop. Efflorescence is a white powder that can form on the surface of natural stone as a result of excess moisture. As the moisture evaporates, mineral salts rise to the surface. If the problem persists, check for a source of excessive moisture near or under the patio.

Fourthly, mix together a solution of 1 part bleach or ammonia to 4 parts water to remove algae and moss. Mop the floor with a sponge or rag mop rather than a brush to prevent scratching the limestone slab . Never mix ammonia and bleach together as the mixture forms a toxic gas.

Fifthly, place felt floor protectors on patio furniture, particularly if the furniture is made of metal that can leave rust stains. Avoid dragging heavy furniture across the limestone surface.

Sixthly, consider placing walk off mats at the entrance to the patio to catch sand and grit.
