Get Rid of Streaks from a Slate Table or Countertop

Slate is a type of natural siliceous stone that is composed of silica and quartz particles. Slate is durable and easy to clean. Unlike many stone surfaces, such as marble or granite, you can best clean stone with mild acid cleaning solutions. Slate is generally dark green, black, gray or red. Choose the best method for removing streaks to ensure the slate keeps it color and texture.
Removing Soap Residue
One common reason for streaks developing on slate tables or countertops is that you used too much soap in your cleaning solution. Excess soap will therefore remain on the surface of the slate. The best way to remove the soap is to use water to rinse it more thoroughly. Water is the best method because it will not damage the slate. To do this, soak a sponge in clear water and rub it over the slate until the soap is gone. You may need to wring out the sponge and soak it again to remove all of the soap residue.
Removing Hard Water Residue
Hard water is water that contains excess minerals. When the water dries, it leaves behind mineral residue that will appear flaky and chalky. You can remove this by mixing a solution of 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar. The mild acidic vinegar will counteract the alkaline hard water stain. Soak a cloth in the solution and rub it over the slate surface.
Removing Water Residue
If the slate is very shiny, the water will streak when it begins to dry on the surface of the stone. Prevent this by hand drying the slate with a clean cloth rather than letting it air dry. Remove the steaks by buffing the slate with a microfiber cloth. Buff in a circular motions to remove the streaks.
Preventing Streaks and Stains
Prevent streaks by cleaning the slate properly as already dictated. You can prevent stains from developing by using coaster, placemats and trivets under pots and dinnerware if your table is slate. If your counter is slate, keep food away from the edges of the counter and don't beat or pour food that might splash on the countertops.
