Kitchens can be one of the most expensive rooms to decorate. You can add your personality to a rental kitchen or spruce up an older room on a budget by knowing where and how to maximize your money. Work with existing elements while replacing the most outdated items to decorate your kitchen on a budget.
Cabinets and Countertops
Paint is an inexpensive way to update kitchen cabinets. White or cream cabinetry is classic and will make your room feel bright and airy. For a French Country look, try a pale yellow cabinet. Taupe or green cupboards create a zen vibe. If you have a large kitchen, experiment with one color on the upper cabinets and a different color on the lower cabinets for a designer look on a budget. Update cabinet inserts with contemporary fabric or a classic toile print. You can also use a fabric skirt to disguise open areas under the sink. Open shelving is popular in modern design. Some contemporary kitchens don't even have upper cabinets. Remove the doors from a few cabinets to create cubbies to display your favorite dishes and vases.
Countertops can be expensive to replace. Stone tile allows you to have granite countertops for a fraction of the cost of an entire slab. Use several countertop surfaces in a kitchen to decorate on a budget. More expensive stone or concrete surfaces allow for a high-end island. Go for a less expensive butcher block or laminate counter under the cabinets where you rarely work.
If you don't have an island in your kitchen, consider a moveable island for more workspace. Portable islands come in stainless steel or rich cherry wood with granite countertops. Look for an island with wheels to easily move it out of the way when not in use. Accent the island with bar stools for an eat-in kitchen.
