Countertops are available in many different materials from natural stone and tile to plastic-based laminates and concrete. Color choices are endless and there is a countertop to match every decorating style and budget. Each type of has its pros and cons, and all require basic care and maintenance. Safeguarding yours keeps them looking new and helps them last longer. Taking steps to properly look after your counters will help protect the investment you made in your home.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, seal the countertop . Almost all countertop materials require sealing to protect them from stains. Wood countertops should be finished with mineral oil if you intend to cut right on them and don't mind the knife marks. Otherwise, use polyurethane too finish them. Granite and marble countertops benefit from being sealed with a sealing product that impregnates the stone rather than sits on top of it. Use a ph-balanced sealer, one containing no acids, on slate, and apply paste wax to concrete to protect the surface. Older laminate countertops should be revived with a coat of wax formulated for laminates.

Secondly, clean the countertop. Routinely cleaning any type of countertop keeps it looking best. Wipe up spills as soon as possible on all types of countertops to avoid staining. Laminate countertops, such as Formica, can be cleaned by wiping with a damp cloth and left to dry. Stone countertops like granite , slate and marble should be wiped up with a damp cloth daily and cleaned with a neutral ph cleaning product once a week. Wipe solid surface counters like Corian with a damp cloth but resist the temptation to use Windex or any similar product as this will eventually cause a cloudy film. Avoid harsh, abrasive cleansers on all types of countertops as they will scratch, pit and etch the surface.
