Slate is a durable, natural stone product that is used for a variety of home improvement projects including walls, patios and walkways. According to the Slate Stone website, any piece of slate that is thicker than 30mm is classified as a slab. Because slate comes in irregular shapes and sizes, it is often necessary to cut the slabs to fit a project. Cut slate slabs using standard power tools and the proper type of blade.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, draw a line on top of the slate slab using a pencil to mark the location where you need to cut it.

Secondly, lay the slate slab on top of two wood blocks, or two other pieces of slate. The area with the pencil line should hover above the ground between the two support pieces.

Thirdly, insert a diamond-tipped masonry saw blade into a circular saw using the instructions for the saw. Diamond-tipped blades are the best option because they do not require water like other types of blades.

Fourthly, put on a dust mask and safety glasses and plug the cord of the circular saw into an electrical socket.

Fifthly, pull the trigger on the circular saw to start the blade spinning and slowly lower the blade toward the slate. Continue cutting slowly until the slate breaks in two.

Sixthly, release the trigger on the circular saw and wait until the blade stops spinning. Set the saw down and remove the dust mask and safety glasses.
