Remodeling a 'kitchen can be a pricey project, especially if you need to buy custom ordered counter tops. If you have laminate counter tops in your kitchen , consider painting them as an inexpensive alternative. A few coats of paint can give your laminate counter tops a fresh new look without breaking the bank. Read below for easy steps to giving your existing laminate counter tops a makeover.
Instructions as follows:
Firstly, clean the laminate countertops. Using an ammonia-based cleaner, scrub all the dirt, grime and residue from the laminate counter tops. Pay close attention to crevices and corners to ensure that you remove all the build-up. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry.
Secondly, wipe down the counter tops with denatured alcohol to remove any remaining grease.
Thirdly, using painter's tape, tape off the entire area to be painted, protecting the stone walls, fixtures, appliances and sink from paint.
Fourthly, sand the laminate counter tops using 120-grit sandpaper. The goal is to rough up the texture of the smooth surface so that the primer and paint have something to stick to.
Fifthly, prime the counter tops using a bonding primer. It is easiest to apply primer with a paint pad, using a small paint brush to cut in along the edges. Allow the primer to dry according to the supplier or manufacturer's instructions.
Sixthly, apply two to three coats of paint to the laminate using a paint brush to cut in around the edges and a low-nap paint roller to paint the surfaces. It is important to apply thin, even coats of paint. Allow the first coat of paint to thoroughly dry before applying the next coat.
